Egyptians up in arms as Ethiopia builds giant hydro dam on Nile River; minister rules out war

May 30, 2013 | Associated Press

CAIRO — Ethiopia’s construction of Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam on the world’s longest river threatens to affect flows of water to Nile-dependent, water-starved Egypt, where there is growing outrage, anger and fear.

Egypt in the past has threatened to go to war over its “historic rights” to Nile River water but diplomats from both countries this week played down the potential for conflict.

Ethiopia Refuses to Cooperate With World-Bank-Funding Probe

May 28, 2013 | Bloomberg

 By William Davison

Ethiopia’s government said it won’t cooperate with a probe into whether the World Bank violated its own policies by funding a program in which thousands of people were allegedly relocated to make way for agriculture investors.

Ethnic Anuak people in Ethiopia’s southwestern Gambella region and rights groups including Human Rights Watch last year accused the Washington-based lender of funding a program overseen by soldiers to forcibly resettle 45,000 households. The Inspection Panel of the World Bank, an independent complaints mechanism, began an investigation in October into the allegations, which donors and the government have denied.

The Escalation of war of Ethnic Cleansing on the Oromo People- The statement of ULFO

ULFO Press Release | May 24, 2013

The current ruling party of Ethiopia has intensified yet again its war of ethnic cleaning on the Oromo people. Lately, it has targeted Oromo communities in Eastern Hararge. The communities directly affected in the recent campaign include those who live in the districts of Anniyyaa, Jaarsoo, and Mi’eesoo.

This latest incident of ethnic cleansing that is being perpetrated against the Oromos in Eastern Hararge zone is a continuation of a grand design of the TPLF-led regime of Ethiopia to undercut the demographic weight of the Oromo and the territorial expanse of Oromiya. This design, one which its leaders in many occasions in such a blatant bravado have spoken about, is framed to fulfill its long-term political and economic objectives.

Ethiopia: Amnesty International Annual Report 2013

May 23, 2013 (Amnesty International) :--The state stifled freedom of expression, severely restricting the activities of the independent media, political opposition parties and human rights organizations. Dissent was not tolerated in any sphere. The authorities imprisoned actual and perceived opponents of the government. Peaceful protests were suppressed. Arbitrary arrests and detention were common, and torture and other ill-treatment in detention centres were rife. Forced evictions were reported on a vast scale around the country.

“No man is an island” in Oromia

May 23, 2013 (Far From Africa):- “No man is an island” is what I associate with Oromo culture. Oromo?! From where?! Oromia! Where?! It’s when I met Dhabesa, a journalist, from Oromia who is now living in Melbourne that I got to understand more about a not-so known country. Dhabesa and the Oromo community which he works with have the great ambition create the internationally recognized state of Oromia. According to Dhabesa, Oromia is a country located on the current Ethiopian territory but in search of government

By Tom Westcott
The empty inflatable dinghy found drifting eight miles off the
 coast of Tripoli this morning
An empty boat used by sub-Saharan migrants hoping to reach European shores retrieved by the Libyan Coastguard this morning suggests that more lives have been lost at sea.

The 15-foot Zodiac inflatable dinghy, empty apart from personal possessions and identification documents, was found drifting some eight miles off the coast of Tripoli.

“A boat this size would often carry 80-90 people,” a Libyan Coastguard official told the Libya Herald today. “We suspect that those on board may have died because we have found mobile phones, passports and money.”

Marriage as symbolic resistance: a story of Ethiopian Muslim activism

By Alemu Tafesse 14 May 2013

Anti-authoritarian struggles creep into the symbolic world both in content and form. Acts of defiance send across sparks of moments that carry multiple meanings to multiple audiences. In many instances, with more repression, more sophisticated symbolization of protest comes to the fore, defying both state control and the pessimist expectations of some people.

Lack of Statehood Exposes Oromo to Humiliation in Their Own Homeland

OLF Info Desk

May 14, 2013

Successive Ethiopian regimes worked against the Oromo. A comparatively larger population, wide geographic area and immense economic resources of Oromia have been viewed by these regimes in Ethiopia as the threat to their naked ambition for domination for which reason they targeted Oromo as an object of fear and hate. Leaving the past regimes’ horrific acts against the Oromo for history we will cite few samples from the current regime.

Ethiopia: Violation of Freedom of Expression in Ethiopia

BY ARID LANDS INSTITUTE, 10 MAY 2013

Statement delivered at the 53rd ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights in Banjul, Gambia

Madame chair, ladies and gentlemen

May 10, 2013 (Ogadentoday Press)- Today, Ethiopia lives through the sword of the Damocles drawn against it. The scourge of the old days of the Red Terror grips the population. 90 million Ethiopians, a total population of a few countries in Africa put together, live in absolute fear. A simple test for the prevalence of unfreedom and absolute violation of freedom of expression is whether or not the population of a given country is gripped with fear when it comes to freedom of expression. That is the reality in Ethiopia today and no amount of claims on the contrary can change this fact.

End of organized suppression of Oromo Nation

By Wahima Rasso

It is extremely excruciating and sorrowful that in this century we Oromos, one of Africa’s greatest people, do not have free political, economical and cultural representation in the United Nations while we are the first nation to adopt democratic government [Gadaa] unlike most world countries, which were under monarchs or iniquitous government systems.

Ethiopia: fire destroys UNESCO-registered coffee forest

May 02, 2013 (OPride):- A historically pro-Oromo refugees Norway has been evolving into an unfavorable place for Oromo refugees and refugees from the Horn of Africa in recent years. Abandoning its own humanitarian streak, the Norwegian government has drifted too far in the direction of questionable tolerance and support for the regime in Finfinne (Addis Ababa), which stands accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in regions such as Oromia, Ogaden and Gambella, among other places. "Genocide Watch considers Ethiopia to have already reached Stage [of genocide], genocidal massacres, against many of its peoples, including the Anuak, Ogadeni, Oromo, and Omo tribes."
